Connecting Parents to the Classroom

Like most teachers, I am always looking for new ways to connect parents to what we are doing in class.  I do a newsletter at the beginning of every month in paper form but I would like to do something online on a more daily or weekly basis.  I know there are sites out there like Edmodo but I am wondering if anyone has every used them and if so what are the pros and cons of it?

  1. I have not worked too closely with edmodo, but I have worked with a couple others. Have you tried google sites. It is an app on google called "Sites". It allows you to make a classroom website and it is very easy to do. You can use a template that is already started or create one from scratch. Another option besides a website would be blogging. You could create a class blog and report out each week on activities or upcoming things. You can have more than one page on a blog too so you could have different sections to your blog. Let me know if you need more info on the sites thing. I have a presentation on how to do it if you're looking to get started.

  2. Kim, I have tried so many different ways to connect parents and have also found that Katie's ideas worked well for me. I created a Google site (ours is password secured) and a blog. I think this year I will put most of the daily info on the blog and general information on my website.

  3. Thanks ladies! I have done a class site for years but I was looking for a more interactive way. Some people have also opened a twitter account just for their students and parents to send out instant info. I might just do what you said and keep up with my blog.
